Good morning,
My name is Cathy Brennan, and I am a lesbian activist in Baltimore, Maryland. I write to alert you to a startling lack of understanding of what “misogyny” means exhibited by one of your lecturers, Ms. Joelle Ruby Ryan.
Please see attached. Ms. Ryan appears to state that it is racist to call out misogyny by Monica Roberts, a trans blogger with a significant history of misogynist language and violent rhetoric against women. Ms. Ryan calls me “racist” for this column: http://bugbrennan.com/2012/03/09/so-not-glaad/ – her statement is demonstrably false (as a side note, defamation is actionable in Maryland). But I am more concerned at what she is teaching women and men in the WOMEN’S STUDIES DEPARTMENT at the University of New Hampshire. In fact, I am APPALLED at her clear lack of awareness as to what misogyny is. Misogyny = hatred of women. Calling women fish and threatening to pimp slap them or run them over with cars or hit them with bats or stab them in the heart = misogyny. These are not difficult concepts.
